Background

Nutrition is one of the cornerstones of a healthy lifestyle. Food is the fuel we put into our bodies in order to survive, and exercise creates the process that turns it into energy. In times past, when a greater amount of physical work was undertaken, the equation was relatively well balanced. However, today's society, with its increased automation and sedentary jobs, and emphasis on passing fashions and hurried lifestyles, makes it more difficult to maintain any equilibrium. This has resulted in serious health problems including obesity, diabetes and heart problems.

Food management
Food management is important not just for checking weight, it can also improve your ability to relax and cope with stress. Food affects every organ of our bodies, including heart, lungs and brain. The correct diet will encourage fitness and energy, nourish nerves, feed muscles, improve circulation and breathing, and support the immune system. It will promote a general feeling of positiveness and wellbeing.

To guard against ill-health it is vital to be aware of your body's needs. Often this means re-educating your body in terms of nutrition and taste. Nutritional education is now seen as a step in preventative medicine. Most experts agree that a well-balanced diet is crucial in preserving health and to reduce stress. Certain foods and drinks can act as powerful stimulants in the short term, but are harmful with prolonged consumption.

Good fuel
If you seek a more balanced lifestyle, you should start by caring for yourself from the inside, and feed your body with only 'good' fuel. A healthy diet should include all the necessary requirements for protein, carbohydrate, fat is also essential but only in limited quantities, as well as vitamins and minerals. Protein is essential for building up strong and healthy connective tissue and carbohydrates and fat provide energy. Vitamins and minerals ensure that the body's cells work properly by controlling the growth and repair of tissues and by stimulating energy production.

Supplementation
Of course there are many foods that aid the mental and physical balance of our bodies. When we are under a lot of pressure and feel worn down by life, the body will benefit from supplements of substances that are devoured by a system under stress. Unfortunately, vitamins and nutrients can have a short shelf-life. Food has to be very fresh, as some vitamins are easily eroded by heat, light and storage. Overcooking can destroy the nutritional value of many foods, and it is always best to eat food raw or lightly cooked whenever possible. Buying organic food is another way of ensuring that our bodies get the best nutrients they need.

Although nutrients are best taken in their most natural form, modern diets do not always allow this, and we often need to supplement our intake. It is now possible to obtain vitamins, minerals and food supplements that are targeted for specific needs.

Balanced diet
It is important to keep your diet and dietary behaviour as balanced as possible. The demands of modern-day life sometimes make it difficult to adhere to a well-balanced diet. There will always be times when the processed, overcooked oven meal is just too convenient, or when you really don't have the time to sit down for a bite. Given this inevitability, it is all the more important to monitor what you eat and try to make up for days when you do not have the time or inclination to prepare something more wholesome. Eating fresh foods is not only better for you from the point of view of the value of the food itself, but it will also help eliminate the huge amounts of sugar, salt and other extraneous ingredients that are added to processed foods, not to mention the unnecessary additives such as colourings, flavourings and preservatives.
