Normal hair is glossy with plenty of natural body and bounce, and is a sign of a well-balanced diet and good haircare routine. An occasional hot-oil pre-shampoo scalp treatment will keep it looking good and growing healthily.

Dry hair is rough to touch, thick in texture and dries out at the first sign of excess heat. It can result due to extreme heat, use of harsh chemicals, salt water or too much sun. Avoid chemical colourants and perms and opt for shampoos and conditioners with nourishing natural oils. Treat over-dry hair and dry scalp with a pre-shampoo oil treatment, massaging the warm oil into the scalp and leaving it for half an hour before rinsing it out with shampoo.

Greasy hair tends to look dull, lank, lacks body and won't easily hold a style. It results from the excessive production of lubricating sebum from overactive sebaceous glands in the scalp. Central heating and environmental elements aggravate the condition but it can stem from a hormonal imbalance. Check your diet and avoid harsh degreasing shampoos. Clean brushes and combs weekly. Try a light scalp massage to regulate the oil-producing sebaceous glands.

Dandruff appears more commonly in greasy hair but can also present itself in dry hair. It can be caused by factors such as chemical body changes, stress, poor diet or wrong application of haircare products. Use special dandruff shampoos and conditioning rinses and treat the scalp with gently.
