Your skin is often a good indicator of your general physical and mental wellbeing, and often contributes to the first impression people have of you. Emotions such as anger can make skin flush, and stress can result in the skin developing spots or even eczema. Thus, a beautiful, smooth, soft skin is the ultimate beauty asset as well as a source of self-esteem. However, few people are lucky enough to have naturally perfect skin throughout their lives and attention needs to be paid to look after our skin both from the inside and outside, especially in a world where convenience foods are common-place and pace of life inevitably leads to stress.
Skin function
Your skin is the body's largest organ weighing between 1.8 and 3.5kg. It protects the vital organs and muscles in the body as well as the delicate sensory organs in the head. It also provides a protective barrier against harmful bacteria, prevents water loss and helps the body maintain a constant core temperature. The skin also disposes of waste matter by means of sweat glands, thus helping to keep your internal system clean. The billions of nerve endings and fibres in the skin transmit information about the external environment back to the brain.
Skin needs to be fed and nourished - inside and out. A healthy diet can keep the body in shape and skin also needs a ready supply of vitamins and minerals to keep it in peak condition. Many factors in excess can drain the body of this valuable resource - canned and over-processed foods, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, sunlight, central heating and drug-taking. These factors can build up and gradually attack the skin so from time to time you need to give it a break. Plenty of water, regular exercise and sufficient amount of sleep are all also necessary for healthy skin.
