A basic routine is essential for keeping your skin healthy, clean and soft. Perform the routine of cleansing, toning and moisturing first thing in the morning and last thing at night, always remembering to be gentle on your skin. Try to use natural products that minimize the use of complex synthetic ingredients.
'Cleansing' is the first part of the routine. Its purpose is to get rid of dead skin cells and toxins, remove all make-up, dirt, air-borne grime, and chemical pollutants, clear out clogged pores, and eliminate infection causing bacteria - and all without stripping away the skin's natural oils. The trick is to use gentle products. If using water, try to use warm water which will help to dissolve dirt and oil. Cleansing soaps can be used by everyone provided that they are pH-balanced and do not strip away the skin's protective acidic layer - normal soaps are often harsh and drying. Cold creams can be too heavy on fine, delicate skin and can leave some residue behind. Cleansing lotions, rather than creams, should be used for dry skins because they can be applied with a lighter touch. Wipe off gently with a soft facial tissue or cotton wool.
'Toning' cools and freshens the skin, removes any remaining dirt and last traces of cleanser and prepares the skin for moisturizing. Apply with a cotton wool pad.
'Moisturising' is essential, even for people with oily skin. Moisturisers can be in liquid form or thick cream form, and although thick creams are suitable for dry skins, some kinds can drag the skin and accentuate lines, while liquid moisturizers are useful for everyone. Apply moisturizer lightly to the face with your fingertips, being especially careful around the eye area. The delicate eye area can be treated using gels or eye-specific creams.
'Protection' - always include an eye gel and lip balm in your daily care routine. The skin around the eyes is the thinnest of the whole body, and the lips have very few sebaceous glands. Both these areas, therefore, require extra special gentle care. In addition, you should protect your skin from the potentially carcinogenic ultraviolet rays of the sun by applying sunscreen whenever you are likely to be exposed to strong sunlight over a prolonged period of time (and especially with concerns over the damage caused to the earth's protective ozone layer).
