| Using Essential Oils |

Essential oils can provide pleasure in many ways - you can splash and soak in them, beautify your skin, sensually caress them over your body, or simply breathe in their wonderful aromas. There are numerous ways of dispersing their fragrance and utilising their therapeutic properties. However, essential oils are highly concentrated and therefore need to be treated with care, and should never be applied onto the skin undiluted. They are also degraded by light and heat and should be stored in dark glass bottles in a cool environment.
Some of the most popular ways of using essential oils include:
1. Massage - This is the most familiar way of using essential oils and often considered to be the most pleasurable, combining as it does, the senses of touch and smell. It is the most therapeutic method as essential oils are diluted in a carrier oil, such as sunflower, and rubbed directly into the skin. Massage has further bonuses: it stimulates the circulation of blood and lymph fluid enabling the oils to disperse rapidly around the body, and the warmth of skin-on-skin friction helps evaporate the oils more quickly, so you get quicker benefits to both the mind and body. 2. Room Vaporisers/Burners - These provide a way of warming essential oils so that their aromas spread quickly to scent a room. They can help create a particular mood, for instance, if you need to relax or simply aid in encouraging sleep. Vaporisers are often little pots with hold candles on the bottom and have a saucer-shaped top to hold some water enriched with a few drops of essential oil. The candle heats the water and the oil rapidly vaporises and disperses into the air. Electric vaporisers are also now available. A more local effect can also be created by adding a few drops of the essential oil to a tissue or handkerchief and kept near you. Rather than using only single oils, special blends are also available for different applications based on therapeutic value and aroma.

3. Bathing - The most relaxing way to use essential oils is to add them to a hot bath. You only need a few drops of oil to suit your mood to get the full benefits, whether to relax or simply ease aches and pains. Run a bath of hot water and add the oil. Close the door to keep in the vapours and lie back and soak for 15 minutes. The steam and warmth help to evaporate the oil and intensify the aroma, and the water helps to soften the skin and speed up oil absorption. For sensitive skin it is better to dilute the oil in a base oil first, like sunflower. Wipe the bath straight after to remove any slippery residues. Specially formulated blends can be used.

4. Inhalation - Steam inhalation is an excellent method for treating respiratory problems, colds and so forth, but should not be used by asthmatics. Simply add a few drops to a bowl of steaming hot water. Place a towel over your head and breathe deeply for several minutes. This is also a great way of giving the face a deep cleanse.

5. Body & Hair Care - Some essential oils are great skin soothers, some heal skin quickly or reduce oiliness, and some just smell divine on your body. They make wonderful beauty treatments from cleansers to moisturisers, all of which make you look and feel good. Many hair conditions such as dryness or excessive grease respond well to aromatherapy using specific oils in a nourishing base. Many products are now available that incorporate essential oils into bodycare products for either therapeutic or aromatic effect.
