The rhythmically applied pressure of massage - the stroking, kneading and pulling - can stimulate and relax the body and the mind. The skin, blood and lymphatic systems are stimulated, which boosts circulation, aids cellular renewal and removes toxic wastes. As tense muscles relax, stiff joints loosen and nerves are soothes, an all-over feeling of relaxation and wellbeing comes about.
Stimulation and relaxation
Massage is commonly used to induce general relaxation, so that any tension or strain experienced in the rush of daily life can be eased and eliminated. It is found to be very effective, working on the mind as well as the body. At the physical level, massage is intended to help the body make use of food and to eliminate the waste materials, as well as stimulating the nervous and muscular system and the circulation of blood. People involved in a great deal of physical activity, such as atheletes, can relieve stiffness after training or working by encouraging toxins that have gather in the muscles to disperse. Pressures of work can also reflect in tight muscles, and again massage offers a method to release this tension.
Physiological benefit
By realigning our bodies, massage (together with other practices) can go a long way to repairing our generally damaged postures. Inactive lifestyles and sedentary occupations have created a society of cramped, stooped and neglected postures. Neck and back pain are conditions from which many people suffer, particularly if they have not been sitting correctly. Not only does massage help to coax the spine and corresponding physiology back into position, it also makes us more aware of our bodies. Relieved of muscle tension, the body feels lighter and can therefore be borne more naturally and with more poise - after a body massage session, people often 'feel taller' as they walk about.
Psycholgical benefit
The psychological benefit of massage should also not be underestimated - the joy of touch and being stroked and caressed by another person is extremely comforting, especially in our increasingly impersonal and detached society. Massage promotes a feeling of calmness and serenity - particularly beneficial to those people suffering from anxiety.
